ASA Applauds California Ocean Salmon Open Season

The American Sportfishing Association (ASA) applauds the Pacific Fishery Management Council (PFMC) for its decision to adopt a limited recreational ocean salmon fishing season for California in 2025, the first such opportunity for anglers since 2022. Finalized on April 15, 2025, this decision strikes a balance between conserving salmon populations and providing meaningful access for recreational anglers along the California coast.

The 2025 recreational ocean salmon season will open on the following dates:

  • June 7-8, 2025: For ocean waters from the Oregon/California state line to the U.S./Mexico border, with a 7,000 Chinook summer harvest guideline. If the limit is not reached, the fishery will reopen on July 5-6, 2025, with additional dates in late July and August available until the guideline is met.
  • September 4-7, 2025: For ocean waters between Point Reyes and Point Sur (portions of the San Francisco and Monterey subareas), with a 7,500 Chinook fall harvest guideline. If the guideline is not met, the fishery will reopen on September 29-30, 2025, with additional days in October between Point Reyes and Pigeon Point if any of the fall quota remains.

These closely monitored openings reflect the PFMC’s commitment to sustainable fishery management, enabling anglers to return to the water while prioritizing the recovery of Chinook salmon stocks affected by drought, climate disruption, and habitat challenges.

“We are thrilled to see the PFMC open the door for recreational salmon fishing in California after three challenging years,” said Larry Phillips, ASA’s Pacific Fisheries Policy Director. “These limited seasons offer a glimmer of hope for anglers and coastal communities, and we appreciate the Council’s collaborative efforts to balance conservation with access to this iconic fishery.”

ASA remains committed to advocating for sustainable fisheries and supporting the recreational fishing industry. For more information on the 2025 salmon season, contact Larry Phillips at lphillips@asafishing.org or visit the PFMC’s website at www.pcouncil.org.
