Smith's De-Hooker with Venting Tool Helps Reef Fish Survival

Barotrauma is the result of swim bladder gas expanding when fish are quickly reeled to the surface. This condition prevents fish from swimming back to the seafloor, posing a serious threat to the survival of the fish. The unmistakable indicators of barotrauma, such as bulging eyes and the stomach protruding from the mouth, indicate the urgent need for angler intervention.

In response to growing concerns about barotrauma's effect on reef fish in the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean's state and federal waters, along with recent mandates by state wildlife agencies in Texas and Florida requiring anglers to have venting devices onboard fishing vessels, Smith's developed the 7.25-inch De-Hooker with a venting tool. This innovative multi-tool, introduced in July 2024 at the American Sportfishing Association’s ICAST, is a first-of-its-kind and aims to reduce barotrauma's impact and improve the post-release survival rates of frequently regulated and popular species like snapper and grouper. Smith's is committed to addressing this critical issue affecting marine ecosystems.?

One end of the tool features a dehooker, designed for swift and easy hook removal, minimizing harm to both the fish and the angler. With a simple maneuver, the bent wire flips the hook upside down, utilizing gravity to gently release the fish, reducing handling time and trauma.

The venting tool mechanism is meticulously crafted for precision and reliability. A hollow and retractable stainless steel needle measuring 1.75 inches, allows anglers to skillfully relieve trapped gas in fish experiencing barotrauma symptoms. By delicately inserting the needle at a 45-degree angle, around 2 to 3 inches behind the base of the pectoral fin, anglers can effectively release the pressure from the swim bladder. This enables the fish to promptly return to its natural depth and resume normal swimming behavior.

Safety features abound in the design of this combination venting tool and dehooker. A locking thumb-operated slider guarantees the needle stays safely retracted during storage and transit. The ergonomic handle, featuring a TPE textured non-slip grip, offers comfortable and secure handling, even with wet and slimy hands. Additionally, a lanyard hole incorporated into the design facilitates convenient storage and access, ensuring that this essential tool is always within reach when needed.

The significance of having a venting tool onboard cannot be overstated, now required in many fisheries, Smith’s all-new venting tool with integrated dehooker represents a vital asset in the arsenal of responsible anglers committed to sustainable fishing practices.
