European Union Temporarily Suspends Retaliatory Tariffs

On April 13, the European Union officially suspended its proposed retaliatory tariffs on US-made imports, including recreational boats, until July 14. The European Commission announced the 90-day pause following President Donald Trump’s move to delay the implementation of higher tariff amounts on certain countries.

Two Provisions Adopted in the EU:

  • The EU voted to approve the new countermeasures (updated from 2018) against US products. For recreational boats, it ranges from 10% to 25%.
  • The EU subsequently voted to suspend the new retaliatory tariffs until July 14.

Ongoing Negotiations

EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic traveled to Washington, D.C. earlier this week to discuss a solution with US counterparts to avoid escalating tariffs, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated, "We want to give negotiations a chance.”

NMMA views this development as a constructive step toward resolving trade disputes that have impacted the recreational boating industry.

Next Steps

NMMA will continue monitoring developments and advocating for a nuanced approach to tariffs that keep the uniquely American recreational boating industry competitive at home and abroad.
